An investigation into the accident is ongoing.

It is believed that the Brit was a holidaymaker on the Spanish island.

Unconfirmed reports claim that the cyclist was attempting to cross a motorway near a holiday resort, though this has not yet been confirmed.

The incident reportedly occurred on the Ma-1 motorway near the turn-off for Cala Major which overlooks the Bay of Palma.

Police could not be reached early this morning to comment on these reports.

All motorways in  are off-limits to cyclists.

No one was available at Son Espases Hospital early this morning to provide an update on the condition of the cyclist.

While being a popular destination for both amateur and professional cyclists, British tourists have repeatedly become casualties on Majorca's roads.

Last summer, a 45-year-old Brit was seriously injured after being hit by a lorry near Caimiri, a small inland town at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains.

The cyclist fell more than 30 feet down an embankment on the roadside.

He had suffered severe head, chest and stomach injuries.

Meanwhile, Scots tourist Graeme McGilvray, 49, from Glasgow, died in March 2016 as a result of a collision with a lorry.
