Ruf, from Indiana, admitted to spiking his wife's drinks around a dozen times in late 2021.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated battery posing a risk of death in July and was sentenced on Monday to four years in prison and five years of probation, according to Fox affiliate .

A conspiracy to commit murder charge, that was originally filed against the man, was dropped as part of a plea deal.

His wife had tested positive for several illegal drugs when she went to the hospital with drowsiness, diarrhea, and unexplained headaches in late 2021.

She contacted the police in January 2022 and they made several shocking discoveries at the couple's home.

Cops reportedly heard Ruf discussing a twisted and elaborate plan he had to run off with his stepdaughter.

Ruf reportedly said his wife's daughter gave him "unknown substances" that he drugged his partner with.

His wife handed police a bottle full of off-white powdered substances and a Coca-Cola can with residue on it during the visit, according to court documents seen by WXIN.

Ruf reportedly confessed to the crime when he was taken to the sheriff's department.

He claimed his wife's daughter, from another marriage, wanted to “get mom out of the picture" to inherit the life insurance policy.

Ruf alleged the daughter gave him a bottle of white powder three months before and told him to sprinkle it into her mom's drinks.

“Ruf stated that the substance would then make [his wife] go to sleep for approximately 13 hours or so,” according to court docs.

“He stated that he would do this to eventually kill her.”

Ruf reportedly told police his stepdaughter's friend also encouraged him to put the powder in the drinks.

What was Alfred W. Ruf charged with?

The 71-year-old pleaded guilty to aggravated battery posing a risk of death in July.

This charge is a level three felony, which is considered mid-level in Indiana.

Ruf had admitted to sprinkling drugs into his wife's Coca-Cola drinks around a dozen times in late 2021.

A conspiracy to commit murder charge was initially filed against him but this was dropped as part of a plea deal.

The trio would wait for his wife to sleep so they could come over to "put on a show," Ruf told cops.

One of the friends would have sex with him while the other would steal the wife's belongings, and he paid the pair for the sexual acts afterward.

Ruf was the only person charged and sentenced in connection with these crimes.

The husband told cops that he and his stepdaughter would get married after they "took care" of the wife, according to court documents.

Ruf alleged that he eventually admitted what he had been doing to his wife on January 3, 2022, because he "felt bad."

His wife recalled a different event, claiming she confronted him first after she became skeptical, and then he came forward about the drugs.
