A TOP cop has said that "enough is enough" in the hunt for missing Madeleine McCann, with the probe having already cost the taxpayer an estimated £11.1million.
The debate was sparked today on Good Morning Britain, after it was reported that the parents of Madeleine have received new hope with an £85,000 cash boost to the police investigation.
Officers are now probing a new lead, with cops wishing to speak to a resort worker who was there at the time when the three-year-old went missing in 2007.
But Sue Hill, a former Metropolitan Police Senior Detective, told Piers Morgan that because of a lack of resources, long-standing investigations such as the search for Madeleine need to be called off.
She said: "Knowing how many undetected murders there are here in London... sometimes you have to put sentiment to one side and say enough is enough.
"You have got to make those bold decisions.
"I don't know what happened. I'm talking about resources.
"What about all the children who are out there now?
"What about those undetected murders here in London which are not resolved?"
When asked by host Mr Morgan if she would also recommend the investigation into missing Ben Needham be called off, she responded: "Yes I would."
Karen Danczuk was also invited onto the show to express her opinion about the continued investigation, having been very vocal about the issue on social media.
However the outspoken "selfie queen" was cut off right away due to a poor connection.
Senior officers see the development of a new suspect as the “last throw of the dice”.
Policing Minister Brandon Lewis last night said: “I am pleased to be able to support the British police who are trying to get to the bottom of what happened to Madeleine McCann and give some kind of closure and justice to her family.”
A Home Office spokesman added: “Following an application from the Metropolitan Police for special grant funding the Home Office has confirmed £85,000 in operational costs for Operation Grange for the period April 1 until September 2017.
“As with all applications the resources required are reviewed regularly and careful consideration is given before any new funding is allocated.”
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Kate and Gerry remain incredibly grateful to the Home Office and the Met Police for the continued work into the search for their daughter.
“But, like the police, they will not be commenting on any operational details.”
