The Scottish Police Federation (SPF) said it has been "inundated with complaints" over a new policy from Police Scotland that will require officers to be clean-shaven in order to wear protective masks. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme on Friday, SPF general secretary David Kennedy said the plan has caused "considerable angst" among officers, adding he has "never seen so many complaints come in" during his time as a full-time official. A CCTV video circulating on social media reportedly shows a group in fancy dress reacting after discovering what appears to be a head on the road.

Venues were ordered to shut by police immediately after what was initially described as a "road traffic incident".

A reveller who was out drinking in the Supercube karaoke bar claimed he was told to evacuate after a man’s head was discovered just metres away.

The pub-goer explained: “I was in Supercube karaoke bar with friends when we were rushed out and told to evacuate.

“We were told a serious incident had taken place but the police would not advise of any more details.

“Someone said the bouncer had a photo of a human head just ten metres away from the bar door.

“I heard rumours they were reporting it as a car accident, but there were so many ambulances and police vans with sniffer dogs - and a tent.

“We had to completely relocate as the whole area was cordoned off.”

Guthrie Street, Blair Street and Candlemaker Road were closed to the public, while several other surrounding night clubs and bars in the Cowgate area were forced to evacuate by police for investigation.

Dozens of police flooded the scene and surrounding roads.

Officers set up two blue tents on the street.

Pictures from the scene show specialist officers and forensics wearing white suits probing the incident.

Bosses at Bachata Blues dance centre revealed their party at The Mash House nightclub was shuttered alongside all other businesses in the affected area.

They said: “Following police instructions, all Cowgate venues are going to be closed tonight due to a major incident.

“All ways to enter Cowgate are cut off. Unfortunately, we have to cancel tonight’s event as Mash House will remain closed all night, following police instructions.”

Punters were locked into the venues before being asked to leave through the backdoor of venues.

Blue and white police tape could be seen at the bottom of Niddry Street, which is home to a number of popular pubs and clubs.
