Who is Kaiane Lopez? Former Miss World and new Mayor of Gibraltar – all you need to know
AN ex-beauty queen has become Gibraltar's youngest-ever Mayor and probably its most glamorous ever.
Kaiane Lopez was declared Mayor of territory amid tensions between the UK and Spain over sovereignty.
Who is Kaiane Lopez?
The 30-year-old is a former Miss World and was declared .
She was the first ever Gibraltarian to be crowned the planet’s most gorgeous woman in Johannesburg in 2009.
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said Lopez represented a ‘new generation’ of Gibraltar women, with women ‘leading from the front’ on the Rock.
Miss Lopez told: "I am proud to be British.
"Gibraltar is British and always will be.
“ Why would we ever want to change our flag?"
Spain is believed to be considering using Gibraltar as bargaining chip in Brexit negotiations with the UK.
Yesterday a Spanish navy ship entered Gibraltarian waters but was quickly chased out by a plucky Royal Navy vessel.
Gibraltar’s First Minister Fabian Picardo, speaking after The Sun launched a campaign to keep the Rock British, said: “It’s great to have The Sun onside.”
