A FOUR-year-old boy who was playing on his scooter outside his home has died after he was hit by a car.
The tragedy happened at the Farranshock Estate in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, around 6.30pm on Easter Monday.
It’s understood the little boy had celebrated his birthday at the weekend and was playing with a relative.
We also understand the driver of the car was on their way home when the accident happened.
The boy was treated at the scene but was later pronounced dead at Mullingar Hospital.
His family had only moved to the area in recent months.
Gardai are now examining the car involved in the accident.
He was one of three people who lost their lives on Ireland’s roads over the Easter period.
Gardai are now investigating the accident and have urged any witnesses to come forward.
One source said: “This is a terrible tragedy and accident in which a young boy has lost his life.”

Local councillor Mick Dollard said: “The local community has been left traumatised.
“When something like this happens, people immediately think about their children and grandchildren.”
Another local councillor Andrew Duncan added: “It’s just a very unfortunate and tragic situation for everybody involved.”
In a statement this morning, a garda spokesperson said: "Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.
"Road users or pedestrians who were in the area at the time and have camera footage (including dash-cam recordings) are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.
"Anyone with information is urged to contact Mullingar Garda Station at 044 938 4000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."
Two other people lost their lives in separate road crashes over the Easter weekend.
An 18-year-old man died in a crash involving a scrambler bike and a car in southwest Dublin on Sunday.
Jason Monks, who was from Jobstown in west Dublin, sadly passed away at the hospital.

And a motorcyclist was killed following a collision with a car in Co Limerick yesterday.
So far this year, 51 people have lost their lives on the roads.
