A PERSON has died and another was left in a "serious condition" after getting into difficulty in the sea.

Emergency services were scrambled to the North Tyneside coast at around 6pm on May 19 after reports two people had been caught in a rip current.

One casualty, who was found to be in a critical condition, was taken by air ambulance to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade confirmed that they tragically died three days three days later.

The other patient was taken to the same hospital by ambulance after being caught up in the rip tide.

Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team, Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat, North East Ambulance Service, an air ambulance and Northumbria Police all attended the incident.

A spokesperson for Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade said: "At around 6pm, HM Coastguard tasked the Brigade, Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team & Cullercoats RNLI to reports of two people caught in a rip current at Tynemouth Longsands.

"A group of surfers at the beach went to the pair's aid and were able to help pass one casualty into the care of Cullercoats RNLI, with the other casualty helped back to the beach.

"The North East Ambulance Service, including their Hazardous Area Response Team, the Great North Air Ambulance Service, and Northumbria Police all then attended the call.

"One casualty was taken to hospital by the air ambulance in a critical condition, with the other casualty taken by road ambulance in a serious condition.

"Three days after the incident, we received the extremely sad news that the casualty who had left the scene in a critical condition and subsequently died in hospital."

The tragedy unfolded off the coast of picturesque seaside town Cullercoats, which is often referred to as "Cullerfornia" due to the surfer crowd it attracts.

The popular area is often rammed with tourists during the summer months.
