And the princess let slip her fears of a right royal rumpus if the youngsters aren't on their best behaviour for the special day.

Kate confided in Andrew Bates - who has worked on the sound for the Queen's speech for 28 years - and his wife, Janet at the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the summer.

Mr Bates, 55, from Coventry, said: "She said that they were all really looking forward to her sister's wedding at the weekend but she was a bit worried about how her children might behave.

"She said she was hopeful that they would be good but you never know at that age." Prince George, three, and Princess Charlotte, two, will be at the heart of the ceremony at St Mark's Church, in Englefield, on Saturday.

The Queen's first garden party of the season saw 8,000 guests turn out to brush shoulders with royals including Will and Kate and Prince Philip.

The bash comes as preparations are entering their final stages for the society wedding of the year in Berkshire.

Pippa's mum Carole Middleton, 62, has gone on a last minute charm offensive in Englefield - apologising in advance for turning residents lives upside down.

She told one villager: "I do hope it doesn't cause you too much inconvenience." One Englefield local told The Sun: "Carole was in Englefield a couple of weeks ago just to apologise to people.

"It's out of her hands now. It's very nice of her but then that's the kind of people they are anyway. Pippa is very shy.

"At Christmas Will and Kate were at church but you don't want to speak to them unless they speak to you first because you know they must get bothered so often." Some residents have even seen secret service vehicles driving through the tree-lined roads, doing security recces.

Another villager told The Sun: "A week ago they were driving around in their four wheel drives having a look around.

"The registration numbers were RR1 and RR2 and they had blacked out windows so it was definitely secret service." Reverend Nick Wynne-Jones - vicar at St Mark's - has included a fitting line in his thought for the week this week.

He says: "The very things that the world thinks of as freedom turn out to be fetters, dominating us and preventing us from really enjoying life to the full.

"How many of those who 'have it all' turn out to be miserable?" Even the local school kids are getting into the spirit - with a sign appearing outside their nursery.

It read: "Congratulations Pippa and James from all at The Old Fire Station Nursery."
