HE'S DONE AN ‘ED BALLS’

New Zealand MP searches for himself on Twitter – but posts his own name by mistake

A POLITICIAN who tried to search for himself accidentally posted his own name on Twitter – just like former Labour MP Ed Balls did in 2011.

Winston Peters, the leader of a small political party in New Zealand, mistakenly wrote: “Tweets on Winston Peters NZ politician.”

His social media blunder quickly went viral with hundreds of people drawing comparisons to Britain’s former shadow chancellor who accidentally tweeted “Ed Balls” in 2011.

The 50-year-old, who is married to current Labour MP Yvette Cooper, became an instant online hit after his social media faux pas and it is commemorated each year by social media users.

‘Ed Balls Day’ sees tens of thousands of Twitter users tweeting ‘Ed Balls’ or retweeting the original post which has clocked up eye-watering statistics.

94,000 people have retweeted the eponymous message while another 60,000 people have liked it.

Despite the embarrassment and mickey-taking, Ed Balls didn’t delete the message and, to his credit, neither has Mr Peters.

Mr Balls saluted his fellow social media novice today and said: “Winston Peters.”

Mr Peters, who posted the embarrassing message yesterday, is the leader and co-founder of the New Zealand First party who won 6.5 per cent of the vote at the general election in 2011.
