NEW York’s famed Times Square was a sight to see as more than 200 painted naturalists converged on the landmark junction in their colourful birthday suits.

The army of nudes were on a mission to tell the naked truth - or tell the truth naked - during an event called Body Notes.

Spearhead by New York luvvies, the art project was intended to "promote positivity and acceptance" according to the organising group, Human Connection Arts.

The nude models were painted in view of gawking tourists and heavily armed police.

Brushed onto their bare torsos were pithy slogans, including, "Embrace Love And Life" and "Born Naked" drove the message home.

Body Notes is the brainchild of Andy Golub (GAH'-lub), producer of NYC Bodypainting Day.

He says it lets people express themselves through "their words and their bodies".

He was inspired by the "Subway Therapy" art project of sticky notes containing people's thoughts after the presidential election.

One of the brave souls taking part was Amanda Cerami.

She told the that it was "an adrenaline rush" to be naked in front of so many spectators without caring about what she looked like.

Another told that, body size wasn't important.

She added: “It is your inner beauty that really radiates out.”
