A HERO doctor has been recognised for his incredible open heart surgery on a newborn baby - at just one minute old.

Dr David Crossland performed the risky surgery on baby Chanel Murrish, who was born with a heart the size of a walnut.

The tiny infant underwent the heart operation at one minute old, claiming the world record for the youngest ever recipient of open heart surgery.

Now three years old, Chanel wants to be a doctor when she grows up in honour of the man who saved her life.

Chanel's mum Fay Murrish said: "Basically, Chanel wouldn't be here without him (Dr Crossland).

"He has been there since literally the moment she was born - he was the one that put the stent in her heart."

Dr Crossland received the Best Doctor award at the recent 'The Sun, Who Cares Wins Awards' in London.

He has operated on more than 2,000 babies, and can add a world record to his list of achievements.

A colleague of the surgeon said: "I've known Dr Crossland for the last 18 years.

"He is driven, he is motivated, he is empathetic and sympathetic, and actually he is emotional.

"He can identify what these families are feeling and how to try to make a difference in a positive way."

The doctor has also been recognised as part of The Sun's Everyday Heroes campaign, which tells the stories of the people who work hard to keep our country safe, healthy and educated.

Running through to the end of the year, the campaign represents the real heroes of Britain, working in a range of public sector roles right across the nation.
