COPS are probing the deaths of a pensioner and his Latvian girlfriend in his council bungalow.

The 75-year-old, named locally as ex-coalman Michael Cobley, was found in the Lincolnshire property with Zanna Ernstone - 29 years his junior - after neighbours had not seen them for a week.

Police described the deaths as “unexplained”, while one resident said carbon monoxide poisoning seemed unlikely because the couple’s cat Minka survived.

Mr Cobley, divorced with a grown up son, had lived with Ms Ernstone for several years.

Neighbours said he used a mobility scooter following a brain tumour about four years ago.

Ms Ernstone, whose 21-year-old son lived in Latvia, worked factory night shifts.

She was said to have been in the UK for 13 years.

One resident in Holbeach, Lincs, said: “They were always very pleasant and polite.

“Nobody has any idea what happened.”

Their bungalow was among local properties fitted with new central heating boilers by the council last year, locals added.

Cops were today standing guard outside the couple’s two-bed home.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “Post mortem examinations carried out this morning on the man and woman found at the address in Holbeach on Thursday have established that they died from natural causes and there are no suspicious circumstances.

"The deaths are no longer being treated as 'unexplained'. "
