What's on a Burns Supper menu?

The Burns Night celebration centres on the entrance of the haggis (a type of sausage prepared using a sheep's stomach stuffed with its own heart liver, and lungs), which is traditionally piped in to the sound of bagpipes.

Once the dish is on the table, the host addresses the haggis, often with either Robert Burns’ The Selkirk Grace or his Address to a Haggis.

The haggis is then sliced opened and served with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes).

There are usually several toasts throughout the evening, with the night ending with guests holding hands singing Auld Lang Syne.

How can you make a Burns Supper vegan?

First things first we need to scrap the traditional haggis, obviously.

But don't worry there's a vegan version available from , which is available in Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

The clever substitute is made from: oats, vegetable margarine, black kidney beans, carrot, swede and mushrooms, amongst other things.

The neeps and tatties are often also cooked in butter but vegans can easily swap this for some veggie oil or a vegan spread.

How can you make a Burns Supper vegetarian?

Unsurprisingly the advice here is very similar to that for a vegan.

Get down to Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons and snag yourself a veggie haggis from .

You don't even need to remove the butter from your neeps and tatties.

How can you make a Burns Supper on a budget?

With the main dish just being a haggis with potatoes and turnips, the meal shouldn't break the bank.

Asda is offering for £1.90 but if that's still too much, how about swapping it out for a six pack of Slices for just £1.

Celebrating Burns Night is really about a celebration of all things Scottish.

So if you're really strapped for cash, an Iron Bru and some shortbread will at least show you tried.
