AN 11-YEAR-OLD girl has been blasted for "immorality" as an investigation in Saudia Arabia probes her role in a "men-only" dance.

A video posted on Twitter shows the girl at a mixed gender festival, performing a traditional wedding dance in a bridal outfit and a full face of make-up in front of hundreds of people.

The video has provoked outrage in the strictly conservative kingdom, prompting the local tourism board to launch an investigation into what happened.

In the clip filmed last weekend, the girl is led to a stage by an older man and then is shown dancing between a group of men in traditional dress and a man who appears to be the compere for the night.

According to a report in , the same man has been detained.

The board has also banned the festival planner from putting on events in Heritage Village, where the event took place in the port city of Jizan in the South West of the country.

The chief of Jizan's tourism board Rustum al-Kobeissy told local television: "The man responsible has been suspended... because it is not acceptable for such appearances to take place in a conservative society."

He added: "The girl was only 11, but she is tall and was wearing [adult] clothes, so she appeared older."

King Salman of Saudi Arabia last year granted women the right to drive, but they are still under strict restrictions in almost every aspect of their lives.

Public interaction with men, such as is shown during the dance, is strictly prohibited.

Saudi commentator Mohammed al-Yahya wrote on Twitter that the video "angered our religion and morals and Arab traditions" for "the majority of people".

Socially prohibited activities for women in Saudi Arabia

There is no written law as such in Saudia Arabia. But the interpretation of Sharia Law in the country imposes a strict gender segregation. Examples include:

  • Interaction with men is limited in all walks of life. The majority of public buildings have separate entrances and everything from public transport to parks are segregated in most parts of the country. Unlawful mixing can lead to criminal charges brought against both parties
  • Women are not allowed to use public swimming pools and can only swim in private or women-only ones
  • Women are also not normally allowed to try on clothes - even in dressing rooms
  • The wearing of makeup or clothes that show off their beauty
  • Women are also banned from making major decisions without men
