The abashed pizza eater said he would 'write to the Queen to ask forgiveness'

A VERY British fear over etiquette has gone viral - after a man claimed his Italian girlfriend might dump him for eating pizza the wrong way.

Posting on Reddit earlier today, user CleonieMydas told how his approach to the traditional Italian food was getting him in trouble.

A comment on the right way to eat pizza has gone viral

"As a British man I use a knife and fork to eat pizza because I am not a savage and like to eat with manners," wrote the Maidstone resident.

"My Italian girlfriend was mortified and I think she might leave me".

His words prompted a flurry of personal attacks - and spawned a heated debate about the right way to eat pizza.

fyrflyeffect joked: "I might leave you... Pick it up, you're not a surgeon working on a patient. Eat it with your hands".

Meanwhile the aptly named TheRudeOne chimed in: "Dont even try use your heritage as an excuse for eating pizza with a knife and fork.

"You should be locked up."

The debate on how Italians themselves eat pizza raged, with the jury out on how to eat the dough-based Italian staple in different parts of the country.

northcyning asked: "Really? My Italian friend eats with a knife and fork and says that’s how they eat it in Italy.

"He’s from northwest Italy if that makes a difference."

Other Reddit users decided the "Italian" way was somewhere in between - cutting the pizza with knife and fork, then eating with your hands.

Meanwhile shapte wrote: "the real reason to eat pizza by hand is that it’s tastier that way.

"Pizza is only as good as the mixture of its ingredients and by cutting it in small pieces you sample less of the ingredients at a time".

The hapless boyfriend appeared to eat his words after the viral storm, writing: "From these comments this is not the country I thought it was and I am clearly a minority.

"I have let you all down, I will write to the Queen and ask for forgiveness".
