Who are Dr Matthew Falder's family?
Falder is the eldest son of a wealthy family from Knutsford, Cheshire.
The 29-year-old's father runs a paint business in Manchester which was founded by his grandfather in 1930.
The family live in a £700,000 Victorian villa in a plush part of the Cheshire town.
Neighbours were baffled as to how a man born into such privilege could end up so depraved.
His father Stephen told Sky News: "This has turned our lives upside down.
"It came as a complete shock and the family is totally devastated."
What was Falder's job at the University of Birmingham?
In 2016 Cambridge educated Falder moved to Birmingham University to take up a research post.
The evil boffin became a geophysicist and seismic oceanographer at the respected Red Brick seat of learning.
While at Birmingham he became heavily involved with the university’s Lapworth Museum of Geology according to posts he made to social media.
When was Falder at Cambridge University?
Privately educated Falder attended the £12,000-a-year Kings School in Macclesfield, Cheshire.
He studied A levels in maths, biology and chemistry before leaving for Clare College at Cambridge University.
Falder remained at Cambridge acquiring an undergraduate degree, a masters and a PhD.
Following his conviction Cambridge University, said it was "appalled" at the crimes and is "actively pursuing" stripping him of his qualifications, in a "very rare" move for the institution.
Birmingham University also said that it was "deeply shocked and distressed" to hear of the offences.
What were his offences?
The pervert admitted 137 offences including the sexual exploitation of a child, voyeurism, making and distributing indecent images of children and encouraging the rape of a four-year-old.
Falder's offending went unnoticed for eight years.
The shamed scientist preyed on victims via Gumtree by pretending to be a woman and blackmailing them.
He persuaded vulnerable users into sending naked or partially clothed self-images, which he shared on the dark web.

Sick Falder threatened to expose them if they didn't comply, leaving some so traumatised they self-harmed.
