Middle-class millennials now proposing with AVOCADOS in bizarre new trend

They mashed it up and spread it on toast - now they are slicing it in half to stick an engagement ring inside

Millennials are now using avocados to hide engagement rings for marriage proposals

THEY mashed them up and spread them on toast, and now the latest trend for middle-class millennials is to use avocados in wedding proposals.

Avo-lovers have been sharing their bizarre and fruity ways to get engaged on social media as the green food fad now infiltrates their love lives.

On Valentine's Day food stylist Colette Dike shared an image of an engagement ring hidden inside an avocado where the pit should be inviting followers to 'Tag someone who should propose like this'.

More than 10,000 people liked the post including follower shylilannie who said: "Nothing would make me happier than someone putting a ring in an avocado and proposing to me! Hahaha you better have my back and tell a dude for me!"

On another post of the picture mindful_af said: "Every hippie girl's dream proposal."

With masalamadness adding: "OMG I didn't even know that's what I wanted and now I MUST get proposed to just for this."

Photographer Kim Tyler caught a special moment between a couple who both appeared to be holding one half each of an avocado.

"I was just minding my business photographing a senior when this literally happened right behind us," she posted.

The trend even has its own hashtag on Twitter #avocadoproposal with many commenting on how they would love to be proposed to in this way.

And those obsessed with bringing the avocado into their everyday life can even get messages carved onto it.

California-based company Custom Avocados tweeted a pic of a satisfied customer who had "Will you marry me?" branded on the side.

Writing on their website a customer said: "I wanted something unique to help propose to my girlfriend, but couldn't find the right thing...  until I heard about !  I had personalized messages printed on avocados, leading her to the final one asking her to marry me.  After the proposal, we had delicious snacks for days.  It was perfect!  Now, I plan to get custom avocados to give as favours at the wedding."

And Scott Brown even used the food as part of his flash mob proposal to his girlfriend Becky.

After friends and family had sung along, he then got down on one knee and produced a ring hidden inside one.

However, there is a downside to using an avocado as Taylor Selby found.

Despite the thoughtful gesture, husband Ben Stevenson who proposed using the fruit found it's inability to stay green and fresh for longer than about 10 minutes impossible to avoid.

That didn't deter his future wife from saying yes. Posting a pic of the squishy romantic moment Taylor wrote: "I couldn't help but share the BEST & most creative proposal/best day of my life in honour of 6 months until we say I do!!!! now where is the avocado emoji?!"

Social media user fathermcgruder also observed the 'brown-side' to using avocado responding to Food Deco's post with: "Here, put on this slimy ring."

Fit.louis commented: "So cool! But I wouldn't like all that avocado on my finger." And Samantha Dube said elsewhere: "Not sure this is a good idea Avos go brown fast could be a bad symbol for the marriage."

And for others, the price of following a food trend could be too much to swallow.

Jeff Siepman posted on Twitter: "When did avocado proposals become a thing?! I don't know how I feel about this." And many agreed.

One user said: "...probably because avos now cost a bomb so it shows your commitment." Boozy_Foodie replied: "Rather save a couple of weeks worth of avo's and get some real bling!"

The avocado is one of the many trends to have been picked up by middle-class millennials. The expensive fruit was often seen as a luxury and exotic item but now it finds its way into many shopping trolleys.

One businessman urged caution with the amount the generation was spending on them. In a televised interview, Australian millionaire Tim Gurner implied young people can't afford to buy property because they're wasting money on fancy toast and overpriced coffee.

He said: "When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn't buying smashed avocado for $19 and four coffees for $4 each. We're at a point now where they expectations of younger people are very, very high."
