Horrifying photos show part of the bus' windscreen smashed and caved in from the force of the impact.

Martin Harris, managing Director of Brighton and Hove Buses, confirmed that one of their vehicles had been involved in the crash.

He said: “In the early hours of this morning, a terrible accident occurred involving one of our buses.

“The poor young lad who was struck tragically died in hospital later.

"We are all very saddened by this awful news and our thoughts are with his family and friends who must be absolutely devastated."

He added: “Our driver is utterly distraught. We are giving him our complete support during this awful time for all concerned.”

An inquest into the boy's death will be opened next week.
