Woman sues Ikea for £112k claiming glass cup EXPLODED in her face when she filled it with hot water

Ms Wang claims she was knocked unconscious, lost a tooth and needed four stitches for a cut on her lip when the 40p glass container smashed

A WOMAN is suing Ikea for more than £112,000 after she claims a glass cup exploded in her face.

Ms Wang, from Beijing, says she was about to take a sip of hot water when the Stelna mug shattered.

Ms Wang, whose first name was not reported, claims she was knocked unconscious, lost a tooth and needed four stitches to repair her lip.

She wants compensation, claiming Ikea sold her a "flawed product" and adding she is still suffering after the accident last year.

Ms Wang said: "I panic whenever I hear any loud, sudden sound.

"If I'm woken up in the night by a sound, I'm not able to get back to sleep.

"During the day, I'm very depressed. It has even come to affect my work."

Ms Wang claims the Swedish furniture giant, which has 16 stores in China, refused to cover her medical bills.

She says she has endured 12 hospital visits to treat her wounds and replace her tooth, and has also suffered severe psychological trauma including insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks.

Her court case was due to begin in Beijing last Thursday, according to reports.

Ikea's lawyers said they had not received court papers and the case was postponed.

The 40p Stelna glass cups are on sale in the UK and across the world.

Ikea says they are "Made of tempered glass, which makes the mug durable and extra resistant to impact.

"You can use the mug for both hot and cold drinks since the glass is very resistant to heat."

Today the retail giant said: "Ikea China takes this incident very seriously and we have taken every step to engage with the customer to encourage a swift and fair resolution since it was first brought to our attention in May 2017.

"We have offered the customer a compensation package however, we have not been able to reach an agreement.

"Ikea is willing to fully cooperate with authorities and comply with all legal and regulatory requests.

"We would like to emphasise that product safety is a top priority for us at Ikea. Toughened glass is a safe and common material for making glassware products.

"Our Stelna glassware product has passed extensive quality and safety assurance tests carried out by Ikea, the supplier and also qualified independent third parties."

In 2013 Ikea recalled its Lyda jumbo cups worldwide after at least 20 broke and ten customers said they were burned when hot drinks were poured in.

And in 2016 it was reported that Ikea was selling furniture to Chinese customers that had been taken off sale in America due to safety concerns.

Last month we reported Ikea recalled packets of marshmallows after mice were discovered at the warehouse where they're made.

The Food Standards Agency issued the recall for all of the 100g packets that have been sold in 2018.
