London Mayor Sadiq Khan ‘works from home’ as murder toll in city soars

Labour MPs tore into London Mayor Sadiq Khan yesterday for going missing during London’s horrifying spate of killings.

Mr Khan finally emerged yesterday after “working from home” and admitted he hasn’t met any of the bereaved families - despite seven murders in in the capital over the last week.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, shown here marking the anniversaries of the four 2017 London terror attacks, did not visit the families of those killed in the wave of knife crime sweeping London.

Tottenham MP David Lammy, whose London borough has witnessed four murders so far this year, said Mr Khan hadn’t even phoned him about the alarming rise in violent crime in the capital.

In an extraordinary red-on-red attack, Mr Lammy singled out Mr Khan as well as the Home Secretary Amber Rudd for failing to act.

He told Radio 4’s Today programme: “I have not had a phone call from the home secretary, I have not had a phone call from the mayor, no one has come to visit my constituency. This is happening across London at large.”

Mr Khan responded by saying he had met Mr Lammy face-to-face on January 31st and said he is “happy to meet with him again should he request it”.

After finally emerging yesterday lunch time, Mr Khan was grilled about his silence.

Asked repeatedly if he’d met the bereaved families, Mr Khan told LBC Radio: “No I haven’t spoken to the bereaved families.

“I’ve got a deputy mayor and police commissioner... the point is that we are a team.”

Pushed again, the Mayor said: “Look, I’m here talking to you and explain some of the things we’re doing.

“I accept there are elections in four or five weeks time, and politicians will have an attack - that’s part of politics.

“But, we’ve got bereaved families, we’ve got two teenagers who have lost their lives just in the last week.”
