Kiwi Prof Neil Gemmell, leading the global team, said: “I don’t believe in the idea of a monster. But I’m open to the idea there are things yet to be discovered and not fully understood.”
The Nessie legend dates back to the sixth century.
More than 1,000 people claim to have spotted a long-necked beast that may be a fish.
Scottish, French, Danish, American and Australian scientists are also involved in the project.
