AN ex lover of parachute murder plotter Emile Cilliers believes she was lucky to escape alive.

Nicolene Shepherd, 34, said Cilliers, 38, was a “controlling and manipulative” compulsive liar who also slept with her best friend.

Nicolene, now 34 and living in Somerset, told the BBC: “He was charismatic and romantic.

“We used to go out for our monthly ‘anniversary’ and he would give me a long-stemmed rose every time.

“All of the girls adored him and he adored the girls.

“You’re young, you think you’re in love.

"He cheated on me time after time and I always took him back.

“He proposed to me using his grandmother’s ring.

“We never made it to the altar, though.

"He was cheating on me with my best friend.”

Nicolene, who is now happily married with five children, recalled an occasion when sex-mad Army sergeant Cilliers whispered in her ear while dancing: “If you ever hurt me I will hurt you 10 times over.’”

Another time she asked Cilliers for money to buy their baby son nappies.

He claimed not to have any - and later that day he bought expensive golf shoes.

Army sergeant Cilliers was convicted this week of trying to murder second wife Victoria, 42, by sabotaging her parachute before a skydive.

She nearly died after suffering serious injuries at Netheravon, Wilts.

He wanted her life insurance to pay debts and start up with a younger woman.
