CABINET ministers tonight hammered out the future of the country in palatial surroundings - and celebrated with a dinner of fillet steak.

Senior Tories gathered at Chequers, Theresa May's country home, to reach agreement on a Brexit customs plan.

Pictures from inside the meeting show ministers mingling and chatting over a cup of coffee before they got down to the serious business.

The Cabinet were welcomed in the grand drawing room of Chequers - and made a deliberate effort to bridge the Brexit divide.

Hardcore Remainer Philip Hammond chatted to the pro-Brexit Transport Secretary Philip Hammond next to the ornate fireplace.

And David Lidington, the PM's deputy who voted against Brexit, was seen talking to Leave campaigner Esther McVey.

Brexit Secretary David Davis, who's threatened to resign over Mrs May's controversial customs proposals, was deep in conversation with Jeremy Hunt.

This morning the whole Cabinet was briefed by chief negotiator Olly Robbins on what outcomes the EU is prepared to accept from Brexit.

They then had a break for a buffet lunch, where barbecue chicken was accompanied with a selection of salads, most of them grown on the Chequers estate.

Two afternoon sessions were on the future of post-Brexit customs, and an update on how the Government is preparing for the possibility of No Deal.

Ministers then tucked in to a lavish dinner of whisky-cured salmon followed by beef fillet with crispy shin.

For pudding, they had marmalade bread and butter pudding with ice cream.

The lavish meals weren't matched by the breakfast offering, however - this morning Treasury Secretary Liz Truss revealed she was eating cold pizza for breakfast because Chequers wasn't putting on food.

Chequers, in Buckinghamshire, was given to the nation in 1921 as a country estate for the Prime Minister.

The Tudor building will play host to Donald Trump next Friday as the US President meets Mrs May for talks and a press conference.
