Stomach-churning video shows doctor burn away pus-filled abscess on woman’s tonsil

WATCH the stomach-churning moment a doctor drains a pus-filled abscess in a woman's throat.
Surgeon Rahmat Omar can be seen using a tool to burn away the growth on the woman's tonsil.
Pus is seen oozing out of the painful lump as it's cut away.
"The video shows the incision and drainage of right tonsil abscess," he said.
"Initial oral antibiotic therapy has failed and he became febrile and unwell."
A peritonsillar abscess, or tonsil abscess, forms in the tissues of the throat next to one of the tonsils.
It is not clear if the woman in the video had a peritonsillar abscess, but given the extent of the infection it's likely to be the cause.
An abscess is a collection of pus that forms around an area of infected skin or soft tissue.
It can cause pain, swelling, and can even block the throat if it becomes too severe.
When tonsillitis spreads and causes infection in the soft tissue of the throat a peritonsillar abscess can occur.
They aren't very common, but when they do occur are more likely to affect teenagers and young adults.
Symptoms include inflammation in the mouth, swollen glands, pain when swallowing, fever, chills, muscle spasms in the jaw, ear pain on the same side as the abscess and a sore throat.
If you have any of these symptoms you should see a doctor.
To treat a peritonsillar abscess your doctor may chose to drain the pus using a syringe to pull the infection out, or a scalpel to open the lump up.
You may need to undergo surgery to remove your tonsils, but that doesn't happen in every case.
Afterwards you will be put on a course of antibiotics to reduce your risk of infection.
