Gary Glitter moved to cushy jail that installs koi carp, ducks and a giant chess set for paedo inmates

Paedo Glitter is now at HMP The Verne where prisoners are given 20-inch flatscreen TVs, tea making facilities and even a personal trainer

GARY Glitter is being held in a cushy prison for sex offenders where inmates play giant chess on a grass lawn and sit admiring a pond full of koi carp, The Sun can reveal.

Paedo Glitter, 74, was moved to HMP The Verne which has had a £3.3million make over to become a Category C jail solely to house perverts.

Prisoners have 20-inch flatscreen TVs and tea making facilities in their own cells and are allowed to walk freely around their wing 24-hours-a-day.

Lags are also given personal trainers who take them for fitness sessions in the prison gym, as well as having access to an astroturf football pitch for five-a-side kickabouts.

The exercise yard has a giant chess set for the inmates to play on, and an ornamental pond filled with foot-long expensive koi carp to gaze at.

There is also a farm area where the convicts grow flowers and look after ducks.

A source told The Sun: “It’s like a holiday camp in there. To think some of these people have raped children, the public would be disgusted to see how they live.

“Because it’s all sex offenders together they feel safe and there is no trouble.

“They are given special privileges because they are older prisoners who are deemed to be well behaved.”

The Leader of the Pack singer, real name Paul Gadd, was jailed in 2015 for 16 years for sexually abusing three young girls between 1975 and 1980.

The Ministry of Justice is currently spending millions on renovating the lino flooring, and repainting the doors to the individual cells in pastel shades of green, red, purple and grey, to “brighten up” the wings.

The source added: “Prisoners are given keys to their own cells so they can wander freely around the wing all night.

“They can all have a party in one cell if they want, stay up all night watching Freeview, or lock themselves in to stop other prisoners entering.”

HMP The Verne was turned into an immigration removal centre in 2013 and ran until 2017 when it was converted back to a prison and is now run as a Category C Training Prison for Men Convicted Of Sexual Offences (MCOSOs).

Parts of the jail have been converted for people with disabilities including lifts, widened cells, and wet room washing facilities.

Prisoners must have a minimum of 12-months sentence remaining to be admitted.

An MoJ spokesman said: “HMP The Verne recently reopened as a closed prison for category C men convicted of sexual offences.

“Protecting the public is our priority and, as with all closed prisons, strict security measures are in place. Under this Government, the most serious offenders are more likely to go to prison, and for longer - helping protect the public and keep communities safe.”
