BRITAIN is set to be blasted by SIX weeks of snow this winter - with a Polar storm sending temperatures plummeting to below that of Iceland.

The UK could be blasted with thundersnow today (November 22) as wintry weather is set to cause temperatures to plummet as low as -5C. Here's more.

When will it snow in the UK?

Although the Met Office has warned there may be snow today, it's not looking like that's still the case.

Temperatures will fall increasing the likelihood of snow in the South Downs, North Downs, Pennines, Grampians, Welsh Mountains and higher ground in Northern Ireland.

John Hammond, chief meteorologist for  told The Sun Online: "We will see showers turning 'wintry' over the Downs, perhaps the Chilterns, and other hills of central and eastern Britain as we head into the night."

Forecasters say the chill will persist throughout the week as the "Beast from the East" blows cold air over from the continent.

The Chilterns, South Downs and North Downs are all at risk of being hit by thundersnow - and there could also be a covering further north with 3cm set to fall in Wales.

WeatherAction’s Piers Corbyn said: “An active low-pressure system will move in from the north west after the weekend bringing very cold Polar air in from the north.

“Combined with high pressure over to the east this will bring a change to much colder conditions as Britain falls under an easterly airflow.

“Northern regions could see heavy snowfall from next week with stormy conditions triggering outbreaks of thundersnow, this could have impacts in terms of travel disruption.

“It will signal a change to much colder conditions with bitter winds, snow and the risk of blizzards continuing through until the end of the month at least.”

This week some heavy showers are also likely to turn into snow across central and eastern areas, including Lincolnshire and the Chilterns.

What will the temperatures be?

Day-time temperatures will be as low as 3C but the windchill factor will make it feel more like freezing.

Overnight temperatures this week will be even colder.

An easterly wind is driving the temperatures down - rivalling even Reykjavik (5C), experts said.

The November average for England and Wales is 10C.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: "Things are going to get colder as we enter the week.

"Temperatures by Wednesday will be down to 5C but the windchill factor will make it feel closer to freezing.

"It's going to feel pretty raw. It'll be the type of wind that blows through you rather than round you.

"It's going to be quite a shock to the system."

The expected snowfall is unlikely to accumulate or cause any major travel disruption, he added.

But the cold weather is likely to remain all week and into next weekend, with a risk of further snow showers.

Mr Keates added: "It won't feel particularly pleasant out there. It's typical cold near-Winter weather with overnight frosts and ice."

Where will the Polar storm hit?

Northern regions could see heavy snowfall from next week with stormy conditions triggering outbreaks of thunderstorms.

Meanwhile much of the country could experience bitter winds, snow and the risk of blizzards continuing through until the end of November

Strongest winds will be in the north and west, meaning it will feel colder than temperatures suggest.
