EU citizens who have built lives in the UK and given huge amount to this country must be welcomed – not threatened

The Home Office’s sinister demand that they 'apply' to stay here after we leave the EU strikes all the wrong notes

THOSE EU citizens who have built their lives in the UK have given huge amounts to this country – and they must be made to feel welcome.

So the Home Office’s sinister demand that they “apply” to stay here after we leave the EU, with the silent threat of imminent deportation, strikes all the wrong notes.

Sajid Javid clearly has plenty of work to do at the Home Office

Of course there will be paperwork involved. But there is a difference between ensuring control of our borders and straight-forward hostility.

Language will be vitally important as we show the world we remain a global nation that is open to those who want to work hard and get on.

Between these tone-deaf messages and the inability to patrol the seas off Dover — with potentially tragic consequences — we are seriously concerned that the Home Office isn’t up to it.

Sajid Javid has work to do.

Forget an honour - Richard Heaton is lucky to have a job

IT beggars belief that Richard Heaton, the mandarin running our crumbling justice system, has bagged an honour.

This is the man who oversaw the Parole Board releasing black cab rapist John Worboys.

He was in charge when the majority of Worboys’ victims only found out the monster was being released when they read about it in the paper.

In the three years of his tenure we’ve seen our prisons go from bad to worse — drug use is rife, extremists are free to find their newest converts, and screws are walking out wholesale.

Forget an honour.

He’s lucky to have a job.

Year we go!

2018 has at times seemed a hard slog, but there ARE reasons to be cheerful.

According to the numbers, Brits have never been wealthier. Our job market has never been rosier. And despite the doom-mongering forecasts from our own Treasury, the bosses’ bible Forbes still holds that the UK is the best place to do business.

Don’t get us wrong — the Government must do more to fix the very real problems still faced by millions of Brits.

But in the year we finally quit the EU, a bit of self-belief will take us a long way.

ITALIAN footie bosses have forced Milan giants Inter to play behind closed doors after their fans abused an opposing black player. Good.

We should do the same over here. If what we saw at Chelsea recently is repeated there or anywhere else in the UK, the shutters should go up.

We must keep bigotry out of the beautiful game.
