Other pictures show major world events - from Crystal Palace's stunning Great Exhibition to the horrors of the Holocaust.

Others show Rasputin in colour and the testing of one of the first nuclear bombs.

The snaps, dating from 1850 to 1960, have been compiled into a new book called The Colour of Time: A New History of the World.

By showing the pictures in colour, it is hoped readers can see "a new way of looking at the world during a time of monumental change".
