Owners built the unusual feature using 1,200 yew trees and it takes around ten minutes to complete.

Puzzle-solvers who get to the middle are met by another puzzle - a monkey puzzle tree which is an evergreen tree native to Chile.

The unnamed owner said: "We designed the maze from scratch, actually using an excel spreadsheet to draw it out.

"It is designed on an octagonal base 26 metres across with eight concentric rows of hedge.

"To begin with it had to be well watered and we also laid weed suppressant material along each stretch of trees as they were growing and have subsequently laid grit on the paths to keep the weeds at bay."

The gardens have been professionally landscaped to also include a rose garden, an ornamental pond and a croquet lawn.

The house, called Waterspring, looks out over the countryside near Chepstow, Monmouthshire.

Its owners redeveloped the property in 2002 to make it into a stunning country home.
