A winner has claimed the jackpot on New Year's Day only once before, in 2008.

There was one winning ticket sold in New York for the draw, with seven other players winning at least £780,000 after matching all but the mega ball.

October's record jackpot has not actually been claimed yet, with one winning ticket sold in South Carolina.

It is the world's largest lottery prize ever won on a single ticket.

Tens of thousands of Brits signed up for the biggest ever Mega Millions jackpot as US touts flogged tickets to overseas punters.

The jackpot win is enough to take 2,000 friends to space, buy Necker Island from Richard Branson or buy Wembley Stadium (£600m) twice over.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands with tickets costing $2 each.

The estimated jackpot for Friday's draw is £31 million.
