MESSAGES written on bananas by the Duchess of Sussex have been called “offensive” by one of the sex workers they were aimed at.
Meghan wrote messages such as “you are brave” and “you are strong” on fruit distributed to prostitutes around Bristol.
But a sex worker called Nikki branded the move “really stupid”. She added: “People out here struggle to eat and sleep and she gifts us some words on a piece of fruit.
“She has the means to help us more than that. It’s offensive, you know.”
Meghan wrote the notes on Friday during an impromptu stop with Prince Harry at the One25 charity in Bristol.
But one woman helped by the organisation welcomed the gesture.
The homeless sex worker, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s so cold right now, it’s a struggle to raise money to get a bed for the night, so any food and bedding is a big help. I think it’s great Meghan is supporting them. It is really sweet.”
A volunteer from One25 also backed the Duchess, who copied the idea from a dinner lady sending positive messages to schoolkids in the US.
The worker added: “The messages were lovely and sensitive. I think the women who would have received them would have appreciated it. Knowing there’s someone supporting them would mean a lot.”
