Prisons Minister Rory Stewart MP puts himself forward to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister

Prisons Minister Rory Stewart told the Spectator what makes him the ideal candidate to be Prime Minister

PRISONS Minister Rory Stewart last night became the latest Tory MP to throw his hat into the ring to replace Theresa May.

In an interview with the Spectator he boasted that his experience as a diplomat in the Middle East, his time as a lecturer at Harvard and the fact he’s written four books makes him an ideal candidate to be Prime Minister.

And he said the timing of Britain leaving the EU was perfect timing for him.

Mr Stewart told the Spectator: “Difficult periods need different types of people.

"One of the reasons why I would be tempted towards this job is that we desperately need to rebuild ourselves internationally after Brexit. I am one of the only people in Parliament who is a genuine specialist.”

But the minister, a Remainer, said his chances of winning the leadership contest depended on Mrs May getting Brexit done before quitting No10.

He said: “If the only thing that people care about is delivering a no-deal Brexit and not a Brexit deal then someone like me doesn’t stand a chance.

"If on the other hand you have got Brexit done, or you have got the first stage of Brexit done, then I think somebody who appeared exciting and practical would be quite appealing.

"At that stage people might be a bit weary of Brexit, they might be quite keen to talk about something else.”
