HUNDREDS of cats have been found holed up in a cramped flat in what an animal welfare officer has described as a “perilous hoarding situation”.

They were discovered by workers from Toronto Cat Rescue who had originally thought they would find no more than 70 cats.

But when they arrived on Saturday morning they were “overwhelmed” after finding there were more than 300  — and scores of cats were pregnant with kittens.

The organisation has since posted pictures of cats perched on every space imaginable in the tiny flat.

Four or five were pictured crouching in a bathtub, another on a toilet seat.

Meanwhile rows of cats can be seen eerily sitting on each step of the staircase, staring back into the camera.

Belinda Vandersluis, Toronto Cat Rescue executive director, told the : “It was an incredible sight.

“It was a difficult place to be, with the strong smells, overwhelming number of cats … throughout the day the number just kept increasing as you counted them.”

Ms Vandersluis said her organisation was alerted by complaining neighbours.

She said: “Some of them are a bit malnourished and dehydrated but no fleas, parasites, dental or medical problems.”

Residents are not legally allowed to house more than six cats, according to Toronto bylaws.

Currently the rescued animals are now housed in foster homes or veterinary clinics, as volunteers prepare them for eventual adoption.

Mrs Vandersluis said: “They should be ready quite soon since they’re doing just fine but we’re keeping the cats with litters a little longer until the babies have weaned.”
