And he is keen to mend bridges with President Trump after the row over leaked messages from the British ambassador.

Mr Johnson plans to visit America in August or September and hold his first official meeting with Mr Trump, .

An ally said: "If we get a trade deal with America we will be very quickly in the market for other deals. It encourages others to realise that we mean business."

Putting together a full trade deal with the US could take years.

But Mr Johnson's team believe they can thrash out a limited agreement which would take effect as soon as we leave the EU on October 31.

A deal covering some specific parts of the economy would be a statement of intent towards the rest of the world.

Trade Secretary Liam Fox, an ally of Jeremy Hunt, warned that formal negotiations with Washington can't start until we have left the EU.

He told the BBC: "We've already had six meetings of our trade and investment working group with the US.

"We can't negotiate anything with the US until we've left the European Union.

Boris Johnson 'could make his own father Stanley the US ambassador'

BORIS Johnson could appoint his own DAD as the next US ambassador, it was claimed today.

Stanley Johnson was tipped to take over as the Washington envoy by former ambassador Peter Jay, who did the job in the 1970s.

He suggested Johnson Senior would be perfect because US officials would know for sure he has a direct line to the Prime Minister.

Mr Jay also tipped Jacob Rees-Mogg for the role after the resignation of Sir Kim Darroch over his leaked criticism of Donald Trump.

He told the BBC: "I found that the most valuable asset an ambassador can have is the belief of the people in the place to which he is sent that he has first-class, immediate and reliable access to his own Prime Minister.

"It is tempting to think in the present context that one person of whom it will be easily believed that he had that kind of access will be Boris Johnson's father.

"Other things that may be relevant are the ability to go down well with American audiences.

"One of the things that Americans love and respond to is what they call 'your wonderful English accent'.

"If you gave the gift of speaking English and presenting youself in the kind of way that, say, Jacob Rees-Mogg does, in America that could be a considerable asset."

Asked if Stanley Johnson should be the ambassador, BoJo rival Jeremy Hunt said: "I just think that lots of things concerning the Johnson family put smiles on lots of people's faces, but I'm not gonna make that speculation."

"Even if you could negotiate them quickly you wouldn't necessarily be able to ratify them."

Today Mr Johnson called for action to tackle Britain's spiralling mental health crisis.

He promised tax breaks to firms which offer support to their workers.
