A COP who was dramatically run down with his own patrol car faces potentially life-changing injuries and may never return to work.

The 42-year-old traffic officer remains in hospital after he was attacked while tracing a Range Rover allegedly stolen from a shopper by another man in Sparkbrook, Birmingham, on Saturday.

The officer - who has served with West Midlands Police for 17 years - underwent surgery on Saturday night and returned to theatre on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Superintendent Tom Joyce from East Birmingham Neighbourhood confirmed his colleague suffered a broken pelvis and other internal injuries as a result of the incident.

He said: "It's difficult to give a prognosis at the moment. They are certainly potentially life-changing - but we are relieved to say, we understand they are not believed to be life-threatening."

The dramatic moment cops swooped on the suspect was captured by shocked passerbys.

Mubashar Hussain, 29, has been charged with the attempted murder of the officer.

West Midlands Police said on Sunday: "It’s alleged Mubashar Hussain hijacked a police car in Moorcroft Road, Moseley, at around 4.45pm and reversed into the officer, knocking him down, before driving over his body as he lay pinned under the vehicle."

Hussain was also charged with a "catalogue of offences" including causing serious injury by dangerous driving, a separate count of dangerous driving, wounding another officer who suffered a cut arm, four counts of assaulting other PCs, driving while disqualified, motoring offences and two car thefts.

Ahsan Ghafoor, 24, from Fulham Road in Sparkhill, has been charged with the same two car thefts, plus dangerous driving and other motoring offences.

Both men are to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday.

In relation to Hussain's charges, Mr Joyce said he "will be facing the strongest penalty we can secure", if he's convicted.

He added: "The suspect is in custody at this time on suspicion of attempted murder - and obviously attempted murder is about as serious an offence as you can get and it carries a mandatory life sentence.

"The expectation is they will face the full weight of the judicial system."

SAVAGE ASSAULT

Police released a statement saying that as the officer moved in to arrest the man "he was violently assaulted and punched to the ground - and then run over by the suspect as he jumped behind the wheel of the PC’s police patrol vehicle.

A spokesperson added: "It’s understood the man drove the marked police car for around a mile into Ladypool Road, Sparkbrook, where he abandoned the vehicle and tried to steal another car.

"However, he was cornered by police back-up – including armed police – and Tasered before being arrested."

West Midlands Police

Assistant Chief Constable Sarah Boycott, said: “This is a shocking attack in which a member of our police family has been seriously hurt while trying to detain a crime suspect."

Addressing how the officer's colleagues are feeling, Superintendent Joyce said: "I think the overriding sentiment of all officers is one of shock.

"These incidents fortunately don't happen every day and they are not incredibly common - but when they do happen they are very sobering because it reminds everyone just how dangerous the profession of policing can be.

"It is often said that the danger people run away from, officers have to run towards and certainly on this occasion, officers were met with an extremely violent individual who has caused very significant injuries.

"I think those who know the officer know he has invested his entire career in trying to tackle car thieves, burglars, and those sort of offenders who cause the most harm to our society.

"He was doing what he has done diligently for many, many years now."

Mr Joyce continued: "He has been with West Midlands Police for 17 years now, of which the last 12 he has been serving as a traffic officer.

"He's a second generation police officer - his father served with West Midlands Police as well - so policing is in his blood. It's his calling if you will.

"I think most officers who have served a career of that length will at some point have suffered some sort of injury and faced violence.

"But certainly this is going to be the most significant injuries he has faced."

WITNESS ACCOUNTS

Ann Hamilton, a witness who lives nearby, told "I saw the BMW speeding round Woodstock Road and he stopped in the middle of the road and legged it down the road.

"There were loads of police cars and they were searching for the man.

"This road is getting terrible.”

Another witness said: "I was brushing outside and I heard a helicopter in the sky.

"I saw one or two police cars coming down the road and there was a black BMW which just stopped.

Cop seriously injured after 'car thief mows him down' as man is arrested for attempted murder

"A guy just ran out of the car and ran down the road. The police car was behind.

"After a few minutes, there were armed police on the scene.

"It’s not everyday that it happens here.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel said she was "appalled" at the "sickening attack".

She tweeted: "I am appalled by the sickening attack on one of our brave police officers @WMPolice. My thoughts are with the officer & his family.

"I wish him a good recovery & I am being kept informed of the situation following his attack."
