Turkey warns citizens against travelling to America over increasing violence since Donald Trump election win

Tensions continue to grow between the two NATO allies in wake of election result

TURKEY has warned its citizens not to travel to the United States amid fears about escalating protests against President-elect Trump. 

The warning comes after the Turkish foreign ministry said the increasingly violent protests could put its citizens at risk.

In a statement it said: "Within the context of risks caused by the incidents and of social tension, our citizens who live in the US, or who are considering travelling there, should be cautious."

Thousands of anti-Trump protesters are expected to take to the streets of the US for a fourth night in a row tonight as the country continues to come to terms with its presidential choice.

Last month, the U.S. State Department updated its travel warning on Turkey, ordering family members of consulate employees in Istanbul to leave the country, citing threats against U.S. citizens.

Tensions have continued to grow between the two NATO allies after repeated calls from Turkey to extradite U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara blames for a failed coup in July.

On Wednesday Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said he hoped for an improvement in bilateral ties after Trump's victory and again called for Gulen's extradition.

Last night saw one of the largest anti-Trump demonstrations since Trump won the election on Tuesday, 10,000 people walked the two miles across Manhattan from Union Square to the future president’s home and business headquarters.

Many could be heard chanting “Not my president!” and waved placards protesting against the President-elects controversial comments during the campaign trail.

The infamous businessman, who was surprisingly elected as president earlier this week, has called Mexicans “rapists” and “criminals”.

His pre-election pledge to build a wall along America's southern border has also drawn strong criticism from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Appearing on the Andrew Marr show this morning he said his Mexican wife had  expressed “absolute anger and outrage” over Trump's controversial plan.

Students across the country have have also walked out of classes, marches have been organised, people have clashed with the police and speakers have spoken out about their fears for the future of America since the election.

‘How to leave America’ has become the most Googled search term in the wake of his shock victory.

And a Canadian immigration website crashed on election night as Americans attempted to flee the US after his win.
