New Russian toy is set to be rolled out for rescue missions but can also play a COMBAT role

TENSIONS between Russia and the West look set to become even frostier following the unveiling of the superpower's latest secret weapon.
The robotics 'caterpillar' is set to be rolled out for rescue missions in disaster zones, such as Syria, but could also be used in a combat role by Vladimir Putin’s men.
The state-of-the-art piece of kit can reach speeds of up to 15 mph, scale walls of up to one meter high, and lug hundreds of kilos of rescue gear.
It is manually operated and can work in rough terrain such as snow or sand and is also fitted with cameras for defusing bombs and radiation sensors in the case of a nuclear explosion.
The bot, known officially as the MRP-300, was developed by boffins at the Russian defence ministry's main Robotics Research and Test Center and the scientific-research center ROKAD.
Military expert Oleg Zheltonozhko said: “For rescue, demining and chemical reconnaissance robots working amid the rubble of a combat damaged city, high cross-country capacity is of paramount importance."
