VLADIMIR Putin has called on his citizens to 'fight until the end' as tensions between Russia and the West continue to escalate.
The rallying call was captured on video during a debate at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday where the Russian president also called his country's aggression towards Europe 'ludicrous.'
During the speech to an annual gathering of Russian and foreign politicians and analysts Putin attacked the US over its foreign policy in recent years and defended his country's bombing of Aleppo in Syria.
He said the bombings had been sparked by unnecessary invasions by other UN countries and that he would't stop aggression until Europe and the US do the same.
Putin told the audience: "If we shouldn't be there – then why are you in Mosul?
"Let's leave everything as it is. Let's do nothing about Raqqa. We always hear about Raqqa from our US partners and how this nest of terrorism should be destroyed but civilians live there too.
"Do you want us to do nothing about it when they take hostages in cities? Do we leave them alone?"
He cited Israel as a good example of a country effectively countering terrorism.
He told the gathering: "Learn from Israel – it never lets go. They fight until the end. That's why it exists at all. There is not other option. We have to fight. If we let things slide, we will always lose."
The video – livestreamed by Ruptly – was watched by thousands and Putin's comments will be closely analysed by the West.
The video served up mixed reactions from viewers with one YouTube user writing: "Putin you are a s*** and we are going to bomb Moscow with a nuke."
Another commented: "Putin was spot on until he mentioned Israel as a good example."
And a third added: "Sorry Mr. President but I don't want to learn from murderers."
Tensions between Russia and the west have continued to turn frostier in recent weeks with Russia deploying warships to the Baltic Sea carrying nuclear-capable missiles with Britain in their sights.
Nato also believes believes that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has amassed 330,000 troops along the border to the EU and its allies.
