The other coloured plumes in the regiment distinguish the department of the soldiers from one another.

They are white for quartermaster, red for veterinary officers and black for medical officers.

Are The Life Guards part of the Household Cavalry?

The Life Guards along with The Blues and The Royals, who wear different blue tunics, red plumes and black sheepskins, make up the Household Cavalry.

It is the second most senior regiment in the British Army and dates back to 1650.

The Household Cavalry was formed in 1992, as a union between two of the most senior regiments in the British Army: the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals.

The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals have existed for centuries.

Princess Royal Anne is Colonel of the Blues and Royals, which is the second most senior army regiment.

Both Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and the Prince of Wales have previously served under the Blues and Royals regiment.

The Household Cavalry is divided into two sections which have different roles, namely, the Household Cavalry Regiment and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.
