Wimbledon 2016: Serena Williams through on Centre Court but battling Brit Dan Evans loses to Roger Federer

Follow events at the All England Club as defending champ Novak Djokovic finds himself under the cosh at SW19

9.06pm: Evans seems in such a hurry; perhaps he should have taken stock once or twice and caught his breath. Federer serves for the match at 5-1. The Swiss star's metronomic serving sets up match point and Evans can't get his racquet where it matters and Federer runs out a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 winner. He says: "I got a good start in all three sets and he was under pressure. He didn't get many free points off his own serve. He was always going to struggle and that was great for me. It's been fun playing Marcus and Dan and I wish them well for the future."

9.01pm: Ah, it's looking ominous for Evans. Federer puts on the after burners and storms in to a 4-1 third set lead.

8.51pm: There will be a 'People's Sunday'

8.50pm: Evans holds serve to make a winning start to the third set. The winner will be the first man into the fourth round, while there remains one second round match to be completed: Alexander Zverev v Mikhail Youzhny. They've been on court for three hours either side of rain breaks and Youzhny is one point away from levelling it up at 2-2 in the final set.

8.43pm: 2-0. After 62 minutes Fed is in the driving seat.

8.40pm: Evans isn't winning many games but he's winning the hearts of the Centre Court with a series of bold strokes. All the same, Federer is serving for the set.

8.37pm: Looks like Heather Watson has her finger on the pulse. Shame that Djokovic didn't do the same...

8.25pm: Swiss master Federer takes advantage of a second break point to lead Evans 3-0 in the second set. A wild backhand does for the Brit. That despite Evans getting 89 per cent of his first serves in, a marked improvement on earlier efforts. Federer moving through the gears now; he's 4-0 to the good in the second.

8.19pm: No more play on the outside courts. At least Novak Djokovic will be glad of the chance to regroup.

8.18pm: Federer takes the first set 6-4. Five aces to Evans' five double faults underlines the gulf in class between the world No 3 and the world No 91.

8.08pm: Steady progress for Dan Evans. Remember, Marcus Willis gave Federer a decent workout despite failing to get oiff the mark in the first set. But British No 4 Evans, who a year ago was playing at the Essex seaside town of Frinton, has broken the Swiss star, although he remains 5-3 down in the opener. Sorry, make that 5-4 as he just holds serve.

8.02pm: Taxi for Tara Moore. Britain's last lady is out of Wimbledon after losing 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in 94 minutes. Elsewhere, they're coming off on all the courts just after Djokovic had lost the second set 6-1 to Sam Querrey to trail by two sets to love.

8.00pm: Feliciano Lopez beats Fabio Fognini 3-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to set up a third-round match with the colourful Nick Kyrgio.

7.58pm: Whoops! Moore sadly and, possibly, fatally loses her serve handing Kuznetsova the chance to take the tie. And things get worse for Djokovic - he's 4-1 down. Djokovic led the head-to-head between these two 8-1 until today, Querry's only win coming four years ago in Paris on a hard court.

7.53pm: Tara Moore breaks Kuznetsova to pull back to 4-3. Great effort. But Djokovic is in trouble, 3-1 down in second set. Meanwhile, Federer cruises into 4-0 lead.

7.41pm: Dan Evans is up and running against Roger Federer on Centre. The British hope's forehand is working well, but struggling to land first serves. A mishit backhand after saving three game points puts the Fed Express ahead.

7.40pm: Tara Moore 3-0 down in final set with Kuznetsova.

7.39pm: Tie break on Court No 1 after Querrey just misses out on set point. But he wins the shoot-out 8-6 to take the early lead against the world No 1.

7.29pm: Serena draws breath after her victory and says: "I know mentally no-one can break me. I knew down a break in the third I was going to have to put my mind into it and I did." On her mum dashing between courts to watch both her and Venus: "It definitely wasn't easy for her - there was a lot of running for my mum!"

7.27pm: Meanwhile, Djokovic is locked in a titanic struggle to hold his serve in the 11th game of the first set against Querrey. He just hangs on.

7.26pm: Moore takes second set 6-2 to pull level against the 13th seeded Kuznetsova.

7.21pm: Serena's through. She breaks McHale in a long ninth game of the third set to lead 5-4 and wraps things up in her service game to win 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. A couple of aces, her 12th and 13th of the match, did the trick to make it 40-0 for Serena to bring up three match points. Then came another ace which takes her into a third-round match with Annika Beck.

7.15pm: Things are improving for Tara Moore. Following a storm on her radar things are improving, there's some blue in her sky and the battling Brit is 4-1 up against Svetlana Kuznetsova.

7.06pm: McHale establishes 4-3 third set lead but gets sloppy in next Williams' service game and it's level at 4-4.

7.00pm: Novak Djokovic and Sam Querrey are up and running on Court No 1. It's 2-2.

6.51pm: On No.2 Court 15th seed tempestuous Aussie Nick Kyrgios has beaten Dustin Brown 6-7, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 with some good first serves in that final game.

6.50pm: On Court No 3 Tara Moore has lost the first set 6-1 to Svetlana Aleksandrovna.

6.49pm: McHale struggling to hold serve in fifth game of final set. Couple of close line calls do her no favours. But she somehow hangs on and leads 3-2.

6.39pm: Says Venus: "This has got to be something out of a movie. She's such a great competitor and it wasn't easy to play out there against someone who was so inspired. I'm not sure I've ever played a 10-8 set."

6.37pm: Venus Williams is through. She wraps up the final set for a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 triumph over Daria Kasatkin in a thrilling rain-affected match that was interupted four times. Venus, 36, found that quite a struggle.

6.35pm: Serena is pounding her serves down so fast it must be like facing a bowling machine...

6.33pm: Venus leads Kasatkina 9-8 in deciding set on Court No 1.

6.26pm: Serena serves to level things up. She does so - despite failing with two Hawkeye challenges. It's one set all.

6.24pm Venus leads Kasatkina 8-7 with the Russian to serve.

6.20pm: 5-1 as Williams holds. On Court No 1 Russian Daria Kasatkina saves match point against Venus Williams...having waited 1hr 20mins to do so!

6.15pm: McHale, ranked 65th in the world, is suddenly finding Serena too hot to handle and is broken for the second time. Williams leads 4-1.

6.12pm: Different story in the second set, though, as Serena breaks and establishes a 3-1 lead. Elsewhere, the players will be out at 6.30pm.

6.00pm: 7-7 now. Then 8-7 McHale. And Serena forehand into the net seals first set for her opponent.

5.57pm: Now 5-5 after Serena goes long again. And McHale pulls head only for a fiercesome smash from the defending champion to restore parity at 6-6.

5.54pm: Williams serves again, 4-3 ahead. Now 5-3 as McHale misses with wild forehand but then Serena goes long on the stretch with a faulty forehand of her own.

5.52pm: Tie break. Serena double faults and McHale pulls it back to 2-3. Make that 2-4 thanks to Williams' passing forehand.

5.49pm: McHale serving to stay in match at 5-6. She makes it.

5.46pm: Going with serve on Centre. 5-5

5.35pm: Serena Williams and Christina McHale will resume their contest on Centre Court shortly. But there will be no play on the outside courts until 6.15pm.

It has just started to rain a bit more so this delay will continue a while for all courts other than Centre, where Serena Williams and Christina McHale will shortly be able to resume their contest.

5.28pm: This latest break for rain is a blow but Dan Evans' showdown with Roger Ferderer is sheduled for the Centre Court once Williams/McHale finish up and will obviously  go ahead. Defending men's champion Novak Djokovic is on Court No 1 after Venus and Kasatkina. He faces American Sam Querrey.

5.08pm: Tara Moore, the last British left girl in the tournament, is 2-0 down to Svetlana Aleksandrovna in the first set on Court No 3

5.07pm: They're even off Centre as the roof is put into place with Serena and McHale level at 4-4.

is locked at 3-3 in the final set against Dustin Brown.

4.57pm McHale has a 4-3 lead over Serena, having broken the American early on. Venus moves into a 7-6 lead over Kasatkina.
