McGregor, 32, broke his ankle seconds before the end of the first round and was unable to continue.

And White has revealed the Irishman will face the winner of a lightweight title showdown between Poirier and champion Charles Oliveira.

He said: "It sucks, it's brutal. It's not the way you want to see fights end. Dustin Poirier will fight for the title.

"And when Conor is healed and ready to go, you do the rematch I guess. I don't know."

When asked to explain his reasoning for re-booking the fight, White said: "The fight didn't get finished.

"You can't have a fight finish that way.

"So we'll see how this whole things plays out. Who knows how long Conor is out [for]?

"Poirier will do his thing until Conor is ready."

McGregor, the UFC's first simultaneous two-weight world champion, will undergo surgery on Monday.

When asked if the Dubliner would fight Poirier for the title on the back of two losses, White added: "All that stuff, you can't do the hypotheticals in this sport.

"It's all about timing and what's going on and what has happened since then.

"We've got to see how this whole thing plays out. Conor goes into surgery tomorrow.

"I don't know how long he's going to be out, how much rehab and therapy he's going to need. You know."

McGregor was furious in his post-fight interview, which he used to send a chilling message to his old featherweight rival.

He told UFC commentator Joe Rogan: "I was boxing the bleedin' head off him, kicking the bleedin' leg off him.

"Usual s***e, dive to close the distance. This is not over. If I have to take this outside with him, it's on."

A fired-up Mystic Mac then sent a message to Poirier's wife, Jolie.

He added: "There was no check. There was not one of them was a check. Your wife is in my DM's.

"Hey baby, hit me back up and I'll chat to you later on. We'll be having an afterparty at the Wynn nightclub baby."
