Henman tips Nadal
Ex-British tennis star Tim Henman has backed Rafael Nadal to win Wimbledon.
Nadal reigned supreme at Roland Garros - winning his 22nd Grand Slam.
And Henman believes he could make it 23 at SW19.
"If Nadal is healthy, which is a big challenge now with this foot injury, can he win Wimbledon? Absolutely," he said on Eurosport.
"That is incredibly exciting. In terms of who is going to end up with the most amount of Grand Slams, a couple of years ago I would have said Djokovic, for sure. But right now, with that little bit of distance, I think Nadal has got a great chance.
"It’s going to be fascinating to see. You have got another opportunity in three weeks’ time so fingers crossed, I so hope Rafa can be there on grass.
"When you have won as much as he has, you just never know what’s around the corner. I think he has been very frank, and very honest, to say that he doesn’t know if he is going to be back here.
"But when you see a performance like that, it was just another clay-court masterclass. You would have thought that when he wins these big titles – don’t forget he’s won the Australian Open, the French Open, now you can talk about the Grand Slam being on.
"Surely it is going to motivate him to keep on going. That’s what we are keeping our fingers crossed for because it’s a privilege to see one of the greatest champions in our sport playing like that.
Nadal's foot injury
Rafael Nadal has revealed he won his 14th French Open title with "no feeling" in his foot.
The Spanish star suffers from Mueller-Weiss syndrome - a rare degenerative condition that affects bones in the feet.
Just a week before the Grand Slam he was seen limping at the Italian Open.
"I played with no feeling in the foot and an injection on the nerve, so the foot was asleep," he told Eurosport.
He added: "As everyone knows in the world of tennis, my preparation was not ideal.
"Outside of the practice courts I was off the [ATP] Tour for one month and a half with a stress fracture in the rib and then I have the foot that is something that stays there all the time."
Wimbledon next
Nadal will now be ready to wow his fans at SW19.
He is third favourite with bookmakers Paddy Power - who have him 6/1 - behind Carlos Alvarez 5/1 and favourite Novak Djokovic 5/6/.
Don't forget Nadal saw off Djokovic in this year's French Open.
Could lightning strike twice at Wimbledon - the next Grand Slam in the tennis calendar?
22nd Grand Slam
Nadal's latest victory in the French Open is his 22nd Grand Slam in what has been an incredible career for the 36-year-old.
14 of those 22 have come at Roland Garros.
There's been four US Open titles, the Australian Open and Wimbledon twice.
With the form he's in right now, you wouldn't bet against him adding another Wimbledon triumph to his storied career.
More from Nadal
“It’s difficult to describe the feelings I have now.
“I never believed I would be here at 36, being competitive again, playing in the most important court of my career one more time.
“It means everything. It means a lot of energy to keep going.
“I don’t know what is going on in the future. I will keep fighting to keep going.
“It is amazing the things that are happening this year. Without my team and family this would not be possible, especially in the tough moments in terms of injuries.
“Without you I would have been retired much before.
Rafa Nadal reacts
The champion was quick to congratulate Ruud, as he remarked: "First of all, Casper, it's a real pleasure to play with you a final here in Roland Garros.
"You are great. I want to congratulate you for an amazing career you are having.
"Especially these two weeks, I think it is a very important step forward.
"I am very very happy for you and your family and your team. I wish you all the very best for the future.
"I have to follow with my team, my family, everybody. It is completely amazing, the things that are happening this year.
"I can thank you very very much for all the things you are doing with me and did over all of the years. Without you none of this would be possible."
Nadal collects trophy
Nadal is now on court where he has been presented with his 14th French Open title.
And he looks just as happy and proud as when he won his first way back in 2005.
The Spanish national anthem plays as Nadal fights back the tears.
Casper Ruud reacts
Speaking after his Roland Garros final defeat, the Norwegian said: "This is a first time for me so let's see how I do.
"The first and most important thing is to congratulate Rafa. It's your 14th time, 22nd all around in Grand Slams. We all know what a champion you are.
"Today I got to feel how it is to play against you in a final. It's not easy and I'm not the first victim. I know there have been many before!
"To you Rafa, your team, your family, you have taken me into your Academy with open arms, also my family.
"You are a true inspiration for me. We all hope you will continue for some more time."
Nadal praise
Former British star Greg Rudeseski has labelled Nadal as one of the greats of the game.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: "We haven't seen the limp on the clay courts.
"But he was limping in Australia. The problem is worse on hard courts, but maybe clay and grass - he can play.
"I do hope his career can continue - he is one of the greats of our game."
The winning shot
And here is how Nadal did it.
A perfect backhand down the base line.
The undisputed King of Clay.
Rafa Nadal* 6-0 6-3 6-3 Casper Ruud
An emotional Nadal takes in the victory with the fans watching.
He took that third set in just 30 minutes.
Despite being second best, full credit has to go to Rudd in what was a sensational run to the final.
He will now rise to No6 in the world rankings ahead of Wimbledon.
Rafa Nadal* 6-0 6-3 6-3 Casper Ruud
HISTORY MAKER!
RAFA NADAL HAS WON HIS 14th FRENCH OPEN!
And that is now 22 Grand Slams and counting for the Spaniard - two ahead of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
A bagel set, Ruud was simply unable to even put a dent in Nadal's armour.
It was tough to watch at times, but Nadal is simply on another planet on clay.
Astonishing.
Rafa Nadal* 5-0 6-3 6-3 Casper Ruud
No let up in the intensity from Nadal after winning his tenth game in a row.
Ruud has won just six points in the third set as he has no answer to Nadal's aggressive style of play.
He will now be serving to stop Nadal from winning at Roland Garros for the 14th time.
Rafa Nadal* 4-0 6-3 6-3 Casper Ruud
It's just effortless stuff from Nadal who is making this seem so easy.
Ruud's head dropped towards the end of the game.
The finishing line is in sight, and Ruud's suffering will shortly be coming to an end.
Rafa Nadal* 3-0 6-3 6-3 Casper Ruud
Total dominance from Nadal.
That's eight games in a row the Spaniard has won now.
Though it was Ruud's chipped backhand across court that was the shot of the game.
He's fighting, but he just isn't on Nadal's level on clay.
Rafa Nadal* 1-0 6-3 6-3 Casper Ruud
Despite an early point by Ruud, Nadal takes the first game.
Nadal looks comfortable.
A fluent show from the Spaniard.
Rafa Nadal 6-3 6-3 Casper Ruud
Vamos, Rafa.
With the King of Spain watching, the man from Mallorca has taken the second set with one hour and 43 minutes on the clock.
There were four break points on the Ruud serve and Nadal finally achieved the last one when Ruud, under enormous pressure, delivered a double fault.
No wonder he shook his head, thinking the "What the F*** is happening here?"
Six of Nadal's previous 13 finals were completed in straight sets.
Ruud must produce the performance of a career to turn this round in five sets.
Rafa Nadal 6-3 5-3 *Casper Ruud
Nadal is going through the motions now.
A second straight game where he holds without dropping a point.
He sealed that one with a 119mph ace.
The second set is his to take, even though he looked out of it at one point.
A penny for the thoughts of Ruud at this precise moment.
Does he still retain the belief he can turn this around? You would not blame him if he thought it was all over.
Rafa Nadal* 6-3 4-3 Casper Ruud
From 3-1 down, Nadal has turned round this second set and now leads 4-3 with a break.
Ruud's shot is long and Nadal walks back to his chair a delighted man.
The way Nadal returns the ball and manages to retrieve the irretrievable.
He is like one of those baddies in the Marvel's films that you think is dead but is somehow revived and comes back to life when you least expect it.
Rafa Nadal* 6-3 3-3 Casper Ruud
Nadal holds his serve for the first time without dropping at least one point.
In the third point of that last game, Ruud tried the drop shot but Nadal anticipated that and caught the Norwegian napping.
The whole court is now bathed in brilliant sunlight, accentuating the wonderful red clay surface of this event.
Rafa Nadal* 6-3 2-3 Casper Ruud
A wayward forehand there from Ruud hands Nadal a break-point opportunity.
And when the next Ruud shot goes long, Nadal punches the air in delight.
Another potentially key moment of this match.
Nadal now has the chance to level up.
More and more people have been making their support for Ruud heard.
They obviously want this to be a closer contest than it has been so far.
Rafa Nadal 6-3 1-3 *Casper Ruud
Ruud has broken the Nadal serve!
A double fault from the King of Clay has handed the second-set initiative to his younger opponent.
Game four, perhaps like in the first set, could prove to be a turning point in the course of this match.
The sun is out now fully and maybe that is a factor.
