Former Premier League star Kasper Schmeichel returns to football after having his contract ripped up on deadline day

KASPER SCHMEICHEL has made an almost immediate return to football after seeing his contract terminated at OCG Nice on deadline day.

The former Leicester goalkeeper was left unemployed last week after he and the French outfit agreed to rip up his contract with hours remaining of the transfer window.

And it hasn't taken him long at all to find a new home with the 36-year-old joining Belgian side RSC Anderlecht.

The Purple and White have signed Schmeichel on a one-year contract that will see him at the club until June 2024.

Speaking to the official Anderlecht website, he said: "After speaking with [Sports CEO] Jesper [Fredbeg] and [Manager] Brian [Riemer], I was very excited about the project that they’re putting in place.

"Anderlecht is just a massive club and former teammates from different places have always talked so highly and warmly of this place. It was something that I really wanted to become part of."

Schmeichel left Nice after losing his place as the first choice goalkeeper to Marcin Bulka who the club signed from PSG.

He joined the Ligue 1 side at the start of last season after spending 11 years between the sticks at Leicester.

The Danish shot-stopper made an astonishing 479 appearances for the Foxes helping them achieve the impossible by winning the Premier League in 2016.

He also won the FA Cup and the Community Shield with the club and will be hoping he can replicate his trophy successes in Belgium.

Anderlecht finished in 11th place in the Belgian Pro League last season and will be looking to improve with their new addition this term.

And they're already off to a good start after winning four of their opening six games and sitting in second place in the division as things stand.
