Murray beat Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round, but was unable to conjure a similar comeback against Humbert.

Having dropped serve in two of his opening three service games, the British veteran was in a tempestuous mood.

The three-time major winner had already growled at his player box within the first three games, and was warned by Nour for engaging in a back-and-forth, when rules state that you can only receive advice from your coaches.

Murray improved in the second set, but was held at arm's length by Humbert.

During the match he fumed: "I don't have a clue what I'm doing!"

Following his win over Shapovalov, Murray suggested that he may only have "a few months left" on tour.

He said: "I probably don't have too long left but I'll do as best as I can these last few months."

And after his defeat by Humbert, he added that it was "likely" he would hang up his racquet this summer.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist said: "Yeah, I mean, I'm likely not going to play past this summer.

"I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play. I'm bored of the question, to be honest.

"I'm not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. But yeah, I don't plan on playing much past this summer."

Murray plans to play at Roland Garros this summer, having played just one match at the French Open since reaching the semi-finals as world No1 in 2017.

What could be a final Wimbledon will follow, before the Olympics in Paris.

During an appearance on BBC Radio 4's Today show, Murray said: "When the time is right I will probably say something before I play my last match and my last tournament.

"Whether I say anything months ahead of the time I don't know."

On the Olympics, he added: "Hopefully I can get the chance to compete at another one."

Murray is next down to compete at Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami next month, and has also entered a Challenger event in Phoenix, Arizona in between.
