Man Utd vs Fulham PENALTIES RESULT: Manchester United OUT the FA Cup after missing TWO penalties in shootout

MANCHESTER UNITED are OUT of the FA Cup after missing TWO penalties in the shootout.

Calvin Bassey gave Fulham the lead with a close range header before half-time, but a low left footed finish from Bruno Fernandes got United back on terms in the second half.

Fernandes' goal was the last goal of the night, with the sides unable to be split after extra-time.

Bernd Leno was the hero for Fulham, saving TWO penalties from Joshua Zirkzee and Victor Lindelof in the shootout to send Fulham through.

  • Cherries have to do it the hard way

If Bournemouth are going to cap off a superb season by bringing some silverware to the Vitality Stadium, they will have earned it.

Andoni Iraola's side were given a home tie against Man City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

They will go into the game full of confidence, knowing they have beaten some of the top sides in the Premier League this season and that another scalp is more than doable.

  • London derby for place in semis

Fulham were rewarded for their Old Trafford victory with a home tie against Crystal Palace in the next round.

Marco Silva will have fresh memories of The Eagles winning at Craven Cottage recently in the Premier League.

However, this time the stakes could not be higher with a place in the FA Cup semi-finals up for grabs and a trip to Wembley.

  • Fulham boss looking at Silva-ware

Speaking with BBC Sport, the Fulham manager talked about what he felt his side did well today:

We cannot achieve nothing so important if you do not fight really hard. In some moments we showed really good moments. The second-half we were really at our level. We were brave and we did it our way and I have to congratulate our players. They did it perfect. Fulham fans are really proud of the team. Overall, I think we were the best team on the pitch. It is going to be a great battle between two good sides, London derby is quite something.

Nobody gave Marco Silva's side a chance of upsetting the odds as they took on the holders of the FA Cup.

They absorbed the hosts' attacks, before scoring with their first shot on target in the match.

Taking the game to penalties, Bernd Leno was to prove the man of the moment, saving two Man Utd spot-kicks to book their place in the quarter-finals.

As the travelling fans make the long trip back down to the capital, they will enjoy every minute of it on the back of this win.

  • Boss speaks after penalty defeat

Speaking with BBC Sport, the Red Devils' manager gave his views on today's match against Fulham, asked how this defeat feels to him and his squad:

It’s hard. We managed to score in the second-half and it is hard for us to press a little bit high. I felt we had the best chances in the game, penalties can go either way. Today it was not our day. We had our chances to win the game, that is the most important thing. Garnacho is often not in the right position to defend but is always in the right position for transition to attack, we know that. The goal is to win the Premier League again, I do not know how long it is going to take.

  • Red Devils fall in title defence

Man Utd came into this match looking to try and make it back-to-back FA Cup trophies but they could not produce the goods against Fulham at Old Trafford.

After falling behind to Bassey's goal, the Red Devils managed to find an equaliser through Bruno Fernandes.

Neither side could find a winner in 120 minutes of football so penalties were needed to find a winner.

It all started so well with impressive spot-kicks from both teams but Leno then saved the efforts from Lindelof and Zirkzee.

Marco Silva will go down in the club's history, becoming the first manager to win against Man Utd in the FA Cup since 1908.

After a 1-1 draw at the end of extra-time, penalties were needed to find a winner at Old Trafford.

These moments tend to give goalkeepers the chance to turn themselves the hero of the match.

Bernd Leno did just that, after six brilliant penalties, he saved Lindelof's effort to give them the edge.

Fulham slotted their next spot kick home and Leno then produced the heroics once again as he saved Zirkzee's effort to put his side through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.
