Ange Postecoglou sacked LIVE: Former boss pens emotional statement as Tottenham eye Frank and Silva as replacements

TOTTENHAM have SACKED Ange Postecoglou despite the Aussie winning the Europa League - and he has released an emotional statement.

The 59-year-old led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final two weeks ago.

Domestically, it was a season to forget for Tottenham, finishing 17th in the Premier League, their lowest position in the top flight since promotion in 1978.

Spurs have been linked with Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Fulham gaffer Marco Silva as they begin the search for their next manager.

  • The morning after...

Unless you've been living under a rock, you will no doubt have seen that Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Spurs yesterday.

The Aussie delivered Spurs their first trophy in 17 years, but it was not enough to paper over the cracks.

The side finished 17th in the Premier League, and set a new record for most Spurs losses in a single season.

  • Frank clear frontrunner

Brentford boss Thomas Frank is the frontrunner to take over from Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

Frank, who has worked wonders with the Bees, is in the box seat, though Fulham manager Marco Silva is also in the frame.

There was interest in Simone Inzaghi before he joined Al-Hilal from Inter Milan as well as FA Cup winner Oliver Glasner, who has said he is “99 per cent” sure he is staying with Crystal Palace.

Firing Postecoglou and hiring Frank could prove a costly business, with the former’s compensation in the millions and the latter’s release clause believed to be around £10million.

Here's a look at how Ange Postecoglou's time at Tottenham panned out...

    Odds from talkSPORT BET:

    • Thomas Frank 1/2
    • Marco Silva 8/1
    • Michael Carrick 8/1
    • Oliver Glasner 12/1

  • 'Talking to other managers'

Tottenham are speaking to other managers about replacing Ange Postecoglou.

The representatives of a number of possible successors are believed to have been contacted.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Fulham chief Marco Silva are among those Spurs are considering.

Crystal Palace’s FA Cup-winning hero Oliver Glasner has been a target but he says he is “99 per cent” certain to be staying with the Eagles.

  • More Tottenham departures

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has lost his right-hand woman in executive director Donna Cullen, who has left after 20 years of service.

Elsewhere, Ryan Mason has also left the club to further his managerial career by taking up the vacant position at Championship side West Brom.

They are set to be the first two of many departures this summer.

The shake-up also includes the appointment of Vinai Venkatesham as CEO, who previously served bitter rivals Arsenal in the same role.

Sources add these moves could be the prelude to majority owners Enic pumping fresh funds into the club.

  • Cost of sacking Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as Tottenham boss and it will cost the club a fortune.

Postecoglou made good on his promise that he "always wins things" in his second season by lifting the Europa League trophy to end Spurs' 17-year trophy drought.

But the 59-year-old tactician has been sent packing by the North Londoners anyway.

And that decision will see the Aussie head coach take home a compensation package worth around £4million.

And according to , that is on top of the £2m bonus Postecoglou collected for winning the Europa League and getting Tottenham into the Champions League.

The ex-Celtic star had two years remaining on his contract prior to his sacking - meaning the club have to pay him out of that deal to move him on.

  • Tottenham fans slam Ange sacking

Tottenham fans have slammed the club as a "disgrace" for sacking Ange Postecoglou as manager.

    One supporter wrote: "Absolute disgrace!!"

While another added: "What an absolute joke of a football club."

    A third simply fumed: "DISGRACE."

A fourth posted: "This club is addicted to self-sabotage. Embarrassing. Thanks Ange, for reminding us what it’s like to actually win something."

And a fifth wrote: "Stunned, and incredibly disappointed."

  • Frank favourite for Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham with Brentford boss Thomas Frank the frontrunner to take over.

Spurs are expected to make a decision on Postecoglou’s successor next week but there is yet to be any contact with the Bees.

Frank poses as the favourite but there are other candidates, such as Fulham’s Marco Silva and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner.

Firing Postecoglou and hiring the Danish tactician could prove a costly business, with the former’s compensation in the millions and the latter’s release clause believed to be around £10million.

The Aussie head coach also walks away with £2m in bonus for landing the Europa League – the club’s first trophy since the League Cup in 2008.

A separate post has been shared on the Tottenham X account thanking Ange Postecoglou for his time as boss.

  • Spurs' spend

Sacking Ange will cost Spurs a pretty penny.

The Aussie manager is reportedly set for a £4m compensation fee on top of the £2m bonus he earned for winning the Europa League and returning Spurs to the Champions League.

While their pursuit of a new boss could prove costly too, with reports suggesting it could take around £10m to convince some of their targets to jump ship.

  • Ange Postecoglou reacts

Ange Postecoglou shared a lengthy statement expressing his gratitude for the last two years following his dismissal by Tottenham:

When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride.

The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime.

Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.
That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.

There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.

We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 7 more years for their next success.

I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them.

I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on.

It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis.

And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special.

We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.

  • Tottenham statement

Tottenham praised Ange Postecoglou's contribution but also revealed that a "unanimous" decision was taken within the board to move on.

Spurs insist they have to compete on all fronts after their worst ever Premier League season.

And news regarding Postecoglou's successor will soon be shared in due course.

Here's Tottenham's full statement after Ange Postecoglou's dismissal:

    Ange Postecoglou dismissal statement

Tottenham released a lengthy statement explaining their decision to dismiss manager Ange Postecoglou:

FOLLOWING a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.

Ange joined us from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and oversaw a period of change on the pitch, returning us to the attacking brand of football that has traditionally been associated with the Club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month - an achievement that will live with us all forever.

We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.

It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.

We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home.

News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.

  • Tottenham confirm Ange dismissal

Tottenham have officially announced Ange Postecoglou's dismissal as manager.

Spurs stated that the decision was taken after reviewing performances.

A "significant reflection" also took place within the club's hierarchy.

Spurs confirmed: "Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties."

  • Tottenham managerial targets

Tottenham will now start searching for Ange Postecoglou's successor at the helm.

Returning managing director Fabio Paratici is thought to be a fan of former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli.

Fulham's Marco Silva, Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner are all thought to be in the frame.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank also poses as a favourite.

  • What's next for Tottenham?

Tottenham will now start looking for a new manager after Ange Posteocglou's reported dismissal.

As SunSport reported Fabio Paratici is to return as managing director and will play a key role in finding the club's next boss.

Paratici was Spurs' managing director of football between 2021 and 2023.

That was before the Italian was forced to resign in April 2023 after being hit with a two-and-a-half-year worldwide ban by Fifa due to financial malpractice at previous club Juventus.

  • Why Ange fell out of favour

Ange Postecoglou fell out of favour during his second year at Tottenham despite an impressive debut season.

That is despite the fact Postecoglou finally ended Spurs' trophy drought since 2008.

The Aussie tactician achieved something the likes of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino couldn't before him.

However, the North Londoners finished the season 17th in the Premier League, just one place above the relegation zone with 22 losses in 38 matches, of which they only won 11.
