Salford fight to keep Todd Carney in Super League by opening talks over a new contract
Australian half-back thought to be keen on NRL return after settling unfair dismissal case

SALFORD are attempting to keep Todd Carney from making a return to the NRL.
The Red Devils ace is thought to be eyeing a return to Australia after settling an unfair dismissal case with former club Cronulla.
Newcastle Knights are keen on signing the half-back, who is only on a contract at Salford until the end of the season.
But SunSport has learned the Super League side has opened talks with Carney about extending his deal into 2018.
Sources say they have kept out of the legal battle that the 31-year-old was involved in, one that pretty much prevented him getting another Australian club.
Carney was sacked by Cronulla after a picture surfaced showing him urinating into his own mouth, making it three NRL sides who ditched him.
But Salford have started negotiations with the aim of keeping hold of Carney, who England ace James Graham believes should get another crack in Australia.
The prop said: “He is a quality player. He has obviously had some incidents that have come to light and some people have judged him quite harshly on that.
“I would like to think he has learned from his mistakes and come back with a real hunger to succeed.
“Look back at 2010, he was the best player in the competition so he obviously has the ability so I think he would add to one of the teams here.”
