Everton flop Davy Klaassen says Premier League is ‘all about the money’ after being flogged to Werder Bremen

Big things were expected of the Dutch midfielder after the Toffees paid Ajax £23.6m for him

Davy Klaassen says English footie is too bothered about throwing money around as oppose to looking after the 'roots of football'

DAVY KLAASSEN has slammed the Premier League for being "all about the money" after making his Bundesliga debut at the weekend.

The Dutch midfielder flopped spectacularly after Everton shelled out £23.6million to bring him in from Ajax.

But just 12 months later the 25-year-old was packing his bags again, after Everton accepted a bid of £12.25m from Werder Bremen.

He only played 16 times for the Toffees, eight of these in the Europa League before the club cut their losses.

But Klaassen believes the mega-money changing hands in England's top flight is damaging the game.

Speaking to German newspaper , Klaassen said: "In England, it’s all about the money – because it’s just there. Basically the clubs can shop as they want.

"In Germany, this really big money is not there. The clubs are more concerned with developing an idea, a philosophy"

"For me, the move to Bremen is also something of a change back to the roots of football.”

It was no surprise that Everton, who underwent a player revolution this summer, decided to accept Werder's bid for the midfielder.

On joining the German side, Klaassen said: "It was important to me to know exactly where the journey was going on the pitch and the ambitions of the club have convinced me.

“After my exchange with (coach) Florian Kohfeldt I have a very good feeling that I can make an important contribution here with my abilities.

“The coach wants to play attractive, attacking football. I am really looking forward to that.”

Klaassen was expected to become a key part of Everton's new-look side during their splurge on transfer fees last year.

The 16-cap international had just skippered Ajax to the Europa League final, where they lost to Manchester United.

But things did not go as planned and he was up against it after poor displays in the Toffees' Europa League games before the Premier League had even got under way.
