UFC superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov revealed Russian president Vladimir Putin congratulated him in a phone call after beating Conor McGregor.

The 30-year-old was sensational has he forced his Irish rival to tap out from a rear naked choke in the fourth round of their brutal encounter.

His stunning performance was overshadowed by the ugly scenes after the fight, after he leapt into the crowd to brawl with a member of his opponent's team

But the Russian ace was later called up by his leader, who told him he was proud of his win at UFC 229.

Khabib said: "This is a respect sport I dont want people talking s*** about fathers and religions.

"You cannot talk about religion. For me this is very important.

Three of Khabib's team were arrested for their part in the scenes after the fight, before later being released.
