Riders were seen speeding across the dirt track after Hipolito had fallen when attempting to land a jump.

Onlookers screamed after seeing the incident while others rushed to the rider's aid.

One man removes the bike from the track and others tend to Hipolito before calling the emergency services.

According to local media, he died in an ambulance on the way to hospital. The exact injuries he suffered are unclear.

Hipolito's boyhood friend and fellow motocross rider Gyscard Bernardo told local media Hipolito had been riding bikes since he was 14 years old and had won state championships.

Bernardo added: "He was a rider with vast experience, I had known him since we were very young."

RN Esporte Club posted to social media about Hipolito's death, writing: "We are very sorry to hear of the early departure of motocross rider Edjarde Hipolito.

"The young champion of many categories since he was young had already shown he would be a great athlete.

"Today, during a race in Sao Pedro, his trajectory was interrupted after an accident. We regret the incident and we will show solidarity with the mourning family. Rest in peace Edjarde."
